We’re all here to have FUN!

At first glance, bowling looks as simple as throwing a heavy plastic ball down a shiny wooden hallway in order to knock down ten pins at the end. As you’ll soon find out, it’s so much more! It’s a sport that requires physical strength and coordination and mental strategies that are second to none.

Whether you’re just going bowling with friends or are starting in a league, you’re here to have fun! There are 8 basic rules of etiquette to follow to make the game more enjoyable for everyone:

Mind your manners. It’s important to follow the rules of any bowling alley you visit, to be polite to staff and courteous to fellow bowlers. Some of the machinery is dangerous, and you can be hurt badly by engaging in horseplay.

Wear appropriate attire. Loose, comfortable clothing, socks and bowling shoes are a must. Most people don’t relish the idea of putting their tootsies where thousands have gone before, but it is a necessary evil. Not only do bowling shoes protect the finish on the lanes, they protect you from slipping and consequential injuries. If you bowl regularly, you can purchase a pair of your own at the pro shop in your bowling alley or at many shoe stores.

Remain behind the foul line. As tempting as it might be to get closer to the pins (They seem so far away at first!), any ball bowled from over the line is considered “dead.” In other words, it doesn’t count!

Give way to the bowler on your right. Instead of rushing to bowl as soon as it’s your turn, always give way to a bowler in the lane to your right who is ready to go. If you allow other bowlers to concentrate on their games, they will afford you the same courtesy.

Roll, don’t pitch the ball. Releasing your ball on an upward swing, or worse yet, pitching it overhand, will damage the lane and, more often than not, end up in the gutter. Release the ball on the forward swing when your arm is lowest to the ground.

Cover any extra holes in your ball. If you’re bowling with a ball that has additional holes in it, the rules state you must cover them with the palm of your hand before releasing the ball. If you don’t the ball doesn’t count and is considered “dead.”

Keeping it out of the gutter. We all get them in the beginning. The dreaded gutter ball can be disheartening at first. A gutter ball cannot contribute to a score. With practice, you’ll learn how to keep the ball in the lane. In some leagues, they’ve modified the rules. If you bowl a gutter ball and it hops out of the gutter and knocks pins down, the pins do count. Be sure to ask what to do if this happens to you.

If you have a question, ask. The staff at your bowling alley will be happy to answer questions about anything related to bowling. From the rules of the game to how to complete a scorecard, they are there to help you.

By following these 8 basic rules of etiquette at the bowling alley, everyone will have more fun while learning to bowl!

There are a number of things to know when it comes to preparing your bowling equipment. Perhaps one of the most important, yet often overlooked bowling equipment preperation step, is to never store or transport your bowling ball in the trunk of your car. In the summer months car trunks become ovens, in the winter months they become freezers. These temperature extremes dramatically affect the performance of your ball, especially durring the first several frames you bowl. Ideally you want your ball to be at the room temperature of the bowling center your bowling at. A ball that has been exposed to hot temperatures will hook earlier and more dramatically while a ball that has been exposed to cold temperatures will tend to skid down the lane. Also, putting your fingers and thumb into an excessivly hot or cold ball can make them swell or shrink considerably making you loose the vital “feel” of the ball and regaining that proper feel could take as long as 1 or 2 games.

There are, however, temperature fluctuations that you can not control. For example, the room temperature of the bowling center your at may rise and lower as large numbers of people arrive and leave. So what to do to compensate for these uncontrollable temperature fluctuations? Well, you could tell all of the people that are at the bowling center they need to leave and then lock the doors, or you could use bowling tape. Perhaps using bowling tape would be the more socially acceptable sollution.

Because feel is vital to executing a smooth and consistent release, every possible step should be taken to bring consistency to the finger and thumb hole specs of the ball. As play unfolds, your fingers or thumbs are likely to swell or shrink as your body heats and cools, making it necessary for you to add or remove tape from the finger and thumb holes on your bowling ball. This is why it is highly recommended that you take the time prior to bowling to add or remove tape from each bowling ball that you plan on using until each ball feels identical. Doing so should help with your consistency.

Compared to other sports, there is very little bowling equipment needed for the sport of bowling. Really, all you need are some bowling pins and a bowling ball. Of course, it is much more fun to play the sport if you also have a regulation bowling lane and bowling shoes!

And while you are considering these types of bowling equipment, you might as well bring in the gutters and the pinsetters and the ball returns. And what about bowling ball drill equipment and other bowling equipment?

Here is a list of important bowling equipment:

Bowling pins – In ten pin bowling (what most Americans refer to simply as “bowling”), you need to have ten bowling pins. These pins are going to be about 15 inches tall, between 3 pounds 4 ounces and 3 pounds 10 ounces, and 4.7 inches round at the widest part – this wide part, the “belly” is where a rolling ball would make contact. The bowling pins are positioned in a perfect triangular shape with a point of the triangle facing directly up the lane.

Bowling ball – Your bowling ball is a very important piece of bowling equipment. When starting out, most people simply use a house bowling ball, provided by the bowling alley. These house balls are generally made of polyester. Of course, there are other types of bowling balls, as well – urethane, reactive resin, and particle bowling balls. The bowling ball is made up of the core and the coverstock. The majority of bowling balls have three holes drilled in them – one hole each for the middle finger, pointer finger, and thumb – but more holes (up to five) can be in the ball.

Bowling lane – This “piece of bowling equipment” is 60 feet long, from the front bowling pin to the foul line. It is 3.5 feet wide. Bowling lanes range from oily to slightly more dry – how oily or how dry the lane is changes which bowling ball you want to use and how you use it.

Bowling shoes – Any avid bowler should own his or her own bowling shoes. As far as bowling equipment goes, bowling shoes are very important – many people will suggest that you buy a good pair of bowling shoes before you even buy a bowling ball! There are right-handed bowling shoes and left-handed ones. Left-handed performance bowling shoes are going to have a braking left foot sole and sliding right foot sole (the opposite is true for right-handed bowling shoes.

Gutters – The gutter is exactly where you do not want your ball to go – they are not generally a bowler’s favorite piece of bowling equipment. The gutters generally line each side of the lane. They allow the ball to roll into it down alongside the lane and straight to the ball return (without ever coming close enough to the pins to knock them down.) Many bowling alleys have “bumpers” for the lanes, available for beginners and children. The bumpers make it so that the ball has no choice but to roll down and knock the pins over.

Pinsetters – When bowling alleys were first started, pinsetters were not a piece of bowling equipment, at all – they were humans who would stay at the end of the lanes, setting up the pins as they fell. Today, we have mechanical pinsetters that can set up the pins perfectly.

Ball returns – Ball returns safely and effectively return bowlers’ balls to them. Because of ball returns, bowlers do not have wait very long at all between rolls.

Ball drilling equipment – When you go buy your first custom bowling ball, they are going to have bowling ball drill equipment at the shop. This sort of bowling equipment allows the experts to drill holes in a ball, making custom-made for you. There is nothing quite like a ball that fits like a glove.

Although it isn’t necessary to own your own equipment in order to enjoy bowling, I strongly recommend that you do. All bowling centers have “house balls” available for use at no charge to customers, and your local bowling center will rent bowling shoes.

But you’ll find your scores mount when you have equipment fitted to your individual specifications. When you buy a ball your bowling proprietor or his pro shop will drill it for you at no charge. If you’re really serious about bowling, you should buy your own ball and have it drilled for your own physical make-up. It’s like buying a tailor-made suit. It will fit you perfectly; it’s yours alone.

Today bowling balls come in almost all colors and weights. There was a time when almost all balls were black, and their weights were always sixteen pounds or very close to it. Now that women have taken up the sport however, bowling balls come in almost every hue; and the weights range from ten pounds to sixteen, though never more than sixteen. Black models retail for about $25; other colors and mottled balls are slightly more than that.

Bowling balls are made of hard rubber. The lighter weight balls contain a cork center, and cost about the same as the sixteen pounders.

Here’s a good test to determine whether the thumb hole fits properly: place your thumb in the ball and turn your hand back and forth, clockwise and counter-clockwise. If you feel just the slightest bit of friction, the thumb fit is a good one. The thumb shouldn’t stick at all; it should be a bit on the loose side.

The finger holes of a well-fitted ball will be neither too tight nor too loose.

The span - the distance between the finger holes and the thumb holes - can be determined in this manner: insert your thumb fully into the thumb hole and then extend the two middle fingers over the finger holes. The second, or middle, crease of these fingers should be directly over the finger holes if the ball’s span is a proper one for you.

You can also test the span by fully inserting the thumb and the fingers. If the second or middle crease of the finger extends beyond one-half of the ball, the span is too narrow. Conversely, if the second crease does not reach the inner edge of the hole, the span is too wide. Remember, an ill-fitting bowling ball will feel twice its weight.

I really think one of the fascinating aspects of bowling is that so many decisions in the sport are left up to the individual. An instructor shouldn’t prescribe what weight ball you ought to use unless he’s had many opportunities to see you in action.

Almost all bowling balls today are of the three-fingered variety, although at one time two-fingered balls were the only kind used. Nowadays the two-fingered style is something of a rarity, although a couple of the leading pros still use them. Ed Lubanski of Detroit won the 1958 World’s Championship with a two-finger grip. But generally it’s felt that the three-finger style is easier to hold; it’s more comfortable and it’s controlled a lot more easily.

I recommend that you own your own bowling shoes too. They range in price from $7.50 to $10, or even $20 for a really elegant pair. Bowling shoes are of a special variety.

The sole of the right shoe is rubber, to help you to brake or slow down as you approach the foul line; it also gives you the necessary traction as you start. The sole of the left shoe is leather, allowing that foot to slide on the fourth or final step.

You’ll also need a bowling bag to carry your equipment in, and these range in price from $7 to $40 or $50. You can purchase a small bag, for carrying the shoes alone, for about $2.50.

Any good comfortable sport shirt is fine for bowling. Just be certain it gives you full freedom of movement and that it doesn’t hamper your arm-swing at all.

One of the wonderful things about this sport of ours is that the participant is not required to go out and purchase a lot of costly, ornate equipment.

Bowling shoes can be rented at most lanes, but many people hesitate to wear a pair of shoes that someone else has worn. If you feel that way, you should purchase your own. Owning a pair of bowling shoes will also give you a bit more confidence. And they aren’t expensive. There are many brands of bowling shoes on the market. You’re better off, however, with a good name brand. You can purchase either the high - or low - cut type. Most of the better bowlers today buy low-cut shoes.

There isn’t much use of taking the beginning bowler farther than this right now, but it should be pointed out briefly that after you go into league play you’ll probably wind up wearing a bowling shirt or blouse and trousers or skirt. You’ll be comfortable in them, and should bowl better. When possible a bowler should buy his own ball. Every beginner should be fitted with conventional grip. It’s no real problem for the young bowler to secure a ball he or she can use at any lane but such a ball might do them a lot of harm. They might think it’s a perfect fit but it may not be and can possibly make their hands sore.

Not only that, if the ball doesn’t fit them, they might bowl so badly that they become discouraged and lose interest in bowling.

Of course, there is one advantage to picking up a house ball. Most of them have the conventional grip which every beginner should use.

The trouble is that the bowling balls you find in many establishments are old and so worn that they often cause physical damage to the bowler’s hand.

Whenever possible a bowler should buy his or her own ball. And it should be purchased from a competent person, someone who knows how to measure the hand for a ball.

Well, first of all let’s consider what type of ball will serve the beginning bowler to the best advantage.

Every beginning bowler should be fitted with a conventional grip. There are three standard bowling grips: the conventional, semifingertip and the full fingertip. The semi has the advantage of added leverage, but, unless you bowl in a couple of leagues a week or do quite a bit of bowling, you shouldn’t go for it. As for the fingertip, I wouldn’t recommend it unless one does a lot of bowling. The disadvantages of the fingertip far outweigh its advantages.

I think bowlers should start out with a three-hole ball and if they decide to change later to a two-hole ball, well - okay.

So it seems to be the general agreement that the conventional grip and a three-hole ball are musts for beginners. But how can a beginner be sure he or she gets the proper fit in purchasing a ball? Any reputable dealer should be able to take care of them.

Being measured correctly is most important in purchasing a ball whether you buy the conventional, semi or full fingertip. When you put your thumb in the hole you should be able to turn it easily, but not sloppily. And for the conventional grip, the center of your knuckles should be over the center of the finger holes. Also, the finger holes should not be too loose. Better a bit the other way.

A new ball retails at from $25 to about $28.

The price of shoes varies for men and women. You can buy ladies’ shoes for from $6 to $14, while men’s shoes run from $9 to about $16. These prices might vary a bit, depending on where you live, but it certainly won’t be appreciable.

You want a bowling-ball bag one for carrying of your new ball and shoes.

You can pick up a bag at very low cost or you can really plunge. Bags start at $4 and run up to about $40 for the really elaborate ones.

Once you are set with this equipment, it is time to start bowling.
